Call for Proposals – Davis Projects for Peace 
The Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning is pleased to announce the Davis Projects for Peace initiative for 2014. The Davis Projects for Peace were made possible by Kathryn Davis, an accomplished internationalist and philanthropist who was committed to providing the resources to the actionable project ideas of today's student leaders.
Projects for Peace are summer-long projects designed and implemented by undergraduate students passionate about peace in their communities and around the globe. The initiative hopes to prepare students as ethical global leaders by providing the resources to execute innovative grassroots project ideas. These projects, as defined by students, creatively address worldwide peace efforts providing sustainable solutions to contemporary society.
The selected project proposal will be funded at $10,000 and implemented during summer of 2014. Proposals need to be submitted by midnight on Monday, January 27, 2014.

DAAD RISE

RISE undergrads have the opportunity to work on cutting edge research projects at top research institutions (e.g., Max-Planck-Institutes) and universities in Germany. Students are paired with German PhD students in a unique mentoring partnership to ensure immediate integration into hands-on lab work and a built-in social network with an excellent opportunity to develop new technical skills. Research projects last two to three months. RISE participants receive a scholarship to cover living expenses. 

These programs are targeted to students from the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences (geology) and related disciplines.

The Ottawa Internship Program is designed to provide first-hand experience with the House of Commons in Ottawa, Canada. Students will work in a Member of Parliament's office for a period of five weeks. Among the programs goals are leadership training, learning the similarities and differences of policy problems and approaches and solutions to them, exposure to a different political party system, acquisition of new political language, the elimination or reduction of political ethnocentrism, viewing the image of the United States' policies and politics from outside the United States, and providing the students with more career possibilities within the world of politics. The program combines field experience with enrichment seminars dealing with a wide variety of issues tangential to Canadian politics.

Applications for the Ottawa Internship Program must be submitted by January 20, 2014. This will be the 31st year of the program, which places students in the offices of Canadian MPs and senators. French language and bilingual (French/English) placements are available.

Post-grad Fellowship Opportunity | NYU Global Academic Fellows (GAFs)

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and New York University Shanghai (NYUSH) are searching for Global Academic Fellows (GAFs) specializing in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, engineering, sociology, political science, economics, statistics, and writing to participate in their highly-selective Global Academic Fellowship Program. This program is designed for young professionals who have or will have recently completed their academic study, have a passion for their discipline, and wish to share this enthusiasm with high-achieving international students.

The Global Academic Fellowship Program provides unique opportunities to explore teaching, work closely with faculty, serve an international population, gain administrative experience, and enhance a developing university community both as a leader and community member. GAFs provide academic support and enrichment to the outstanding student body of either NYUAD or NYUSH who herald from over 100 countries and speak nearly 100 distinct languages. GAFs ensure that these students not only succeed but excel in their academic and personal development.

Science and mathematics GAFs are responsible for teaching break-out recitations for select science and math courses, holding office hours for one-on-one or small group tutoring, providing homework assistance, proctoring and grading course quizzes and exams, and supporting faculty in providing quality educative experiences for students. In addition to academic support, GAFs frequently partner with various departments to enhance the services provided to students and faculty as well as to develop skill-sets to prepare them for their post-fellowship endeavors.

Engineering GAFs support foundational-year engineering courses by providing laboratory assistance, one-on-one tutoring support, and small group review sessions. In addition to academic support, GAFs frequently partner with various departments to enhance the services provided to students and faculty as well as to develop skill-sets to prepare them for their post-fellowship endeavors.

Global Academic Fellows in the Writing Program play an integral role in the development of students’ written and oral expression throughout the four years of their education—from the first-year experience to the Capstone project. Writing GAFs help the writing faculty with assessment and course placement; serve as writing and/or speech consultants in the Writing Center; give individualized tutorials as part of Analysis & Expression and writing-intensive classes; may provide writing support in secondary academic assignments; consult with faculty on best writing and speaking practices across the curriculum; provide individual and group support for Capstone projects; and support Writing Program and Writing Center initiatives (such as special workshops, website development, and curricular or extra-curricular events).  Writing GAFs participate in development workshops throughout the year, engage in their own writing projects, and will be asked to meet deadlines and share their ongoing work as part of staff development. In addition to academic support, GAFs frequently partner with various departments to enhance the services provided to students and faculty as well as to develop skill-sets to prepare them for their post-fellowship endeavors.

Previous GAFs have been admitted to graduate schools and professional programs at distinguished institutions (NYU, Harvard, Rockefeller, Yale, Columbia, and NYU Polytechnic). Others have been inspired by their GAF work and have chosen to pursue careers in higher education administration, from career development services to special events management, from student life coordination to academic program management.

IAESTE Internships  - Program Overview

The IAESTE Internship Placement Program matches U.S. university students majoring in technical fields with paid internships abroad. Positions are available in industry, research institutes and universities, consulting firms, labs, and other work environments. Most placements are for 8-12 weeks during the summer, but fall and longer-term placements are also available. Best of all, most technical students in the United States are eligible to apply!

Applicant Requirements

In order to apply for the IAESTE Placement Program, you must fulfill all of the eligibility conditions below.

  • Enrollment: U.S. citizens and International Students enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university in a full-time bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. program, before, during, and after the program. U.S. students studying abroad are eligible as long as they are still enrolled at an accredited U.S. institution.
  • Standing: Applicants must have attained junior-level standing or above by the time the internship begins. Sophomores and graduating seniors may also apply. Recent graduates are not eligible.
  • Major: Applicants must be enrolled in a technical field of study, including, but not limited to engineering, computer science, architecture, natural and physical sciences, or agricultural sciences.
  • Age: Applicants must be between the ages of 19 and 30.
  • Language: Applicants must be fluent in English. Foreign language skill requirements vary by position. While most positions only require English, foreign language skills are preferred.

Winter Semester Course Option | Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)



TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
WINTER SEMESTER

ELI 391/591: Topics in ESL (3 credits)
Fundamentals in Teaching English as a Second Language Internationally

ELI 391/591 introduces students to the essentials of classroom methodology and practice for teaching English as a Second Language internationally. Lectures and discussions will focus on language learning and communicative teaching practices for ESL in international settings. Activities include designing and developing appropriate materials and using resources for multiple age groups, levels, and for culturally specific contexts.

We will explore all skill areas (speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary) and examine the sociopolitical contexts of ESL teachers in the world. Additionally, participants will be expected to teach mini-lessons, do reading assignments and observations of other foreign language classes, and carry out a project targeting a culturally-specific context and age group.

ESL teaching needed for Peace Corps experience may be done in tandem with this course. Additionally, the opportunity to apply for the Tsinghua University Summer English Immersion Camp in Beijing, China as a paid intern may be made available through this course.
