EU Study Abroad (Brussels) and Ottawa Internship program information sessions

Information sessions for the EU Study Abroad Program and the Ottawa Internship Program will be held in the Eldersveld Room of Haven Hall on Wednesday, December 7th.  The EU information session will be held from 12-1 and the Ottawa session from 1-2.

This year’s program theme is,
“The EU as a Global Actor"


·         Students earn 3 hours of upper-division political science credit and experience firsthand the EU in the heart of Europe.  Attendance at all seminars and program activities is mandatory and all students will be required to submit a 15-page paper related to the theme of this year’s seminar, due June 15, 2012.

·         This highly concentrated program involves a combination of visits to EU Parliament, Commission and Council, NATO, the ICC, the U.S. Mission to the EU and other international institutions, seminars and cultural excursions.

  • Most of last year’s students were from the University of Michigan.

·         Students stay at the Irish College (www.leuveninstitute.eu) in the heart of Leuven, one of Europe’s oldest university towns, renowned for its blend of medieval and contemporary architecture.

  • Eligibility for the program is the satisfactory completion of a course in either Comparative or International Politics.
  • Program costs cover accommodation (including breakfast), tuition fees and entrance costs associated with cultural activities.  It is anticipated that they will be approximately $2,200. Expenses such as train and subway fares within Belgium, are relatively small and are paid for by program participants as they are incurred.  Students are responsible for travel to and from Leuven (15 minutes by train from Brussels International Airport), all meals, except breakfast, and any personal spending.

Program Deadlines THIS WEEK!

a)      Cultural Vistas (formerly CDS), affiliated with U-M’s Germanic Languages Department, offers summer internships in Germany in most fields, open to UM students who have good German skills; no citizenship restrictions—apply by Dec. 1.

Three programs suitable for students who are graduating (the Congress-Bundestag program is also available to current students) have deadlines of Thursday, Dec. 1 and Friday, December 2nd (for JET) application deadlines:

b)      Are you graduating, or a current student who would like to spend a year in Germany doing both study and an internship?  Then consider the Cultural Vistas (formerly CDS) Congress-Bundestag program; note that eligibility is for students aged 18-24 who are US citizens or permanent residents; German skills are a plus but not required at time of application—apply by Dec. 1.  University of Michigan students have participated as undergrads, as grad students, and after graduation!

c)       Princeton-in-Asia offers one-year placements throughout Asia, either for teaching English or working in with Non-Governmental Organizations, media or business. 

d)      JET, a Japanese government program, offers one-year (renewable) English teaching assistantships throughout Japan– no knowledge of Japanese required! Application deadline is Friday, December 2nd.

Peace Corps World AIDS Day event


World AIDS Day with the Peace Corps is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those lost.


Please join us to learn more about how UM students and Peace Corps join in the fight against HIV by volunteering in 76 countries throughout the world. Learn more about the Peace Corps application process and specifics of the health program.  Also, you will have a chance to hear from a panel of returned volunteers who served in China, Cameroon and Togo developing HIV/AIDS education projects from the ground up.

The World Aids Day Session will be held on Dec. 1st in the School of Public Health (Room 1655) from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm.

INTERCULTURAL LEADERSHIP SEMINAR

The University of Michigan’s 16th annual Intercultural Leadership Seminar (ILS) will be held during Spring Break 2012.  ILS is an interactive 6-day program intended to provide participants with a deeper understanding of how to lead and work more effectively in intercultural settings. The seminar is designed to deliberately address the attitudes, awareness, knowledge and skills which are central aspects to developing intercultural competence. ILS attracts participants from diverse cultures who are concerned with cross-cultural issues, and allows participants the unique opportunity to engage in intensive dialogue with others who share a commitment to intercultural competence.


Intercultural Leadership Seminar is open to UM-Ann Arbor undergraduate and graduate students free of charge - transportation, housing, and meals are all included.  Participants attend the session February 27 - March 3, 2011 at the Michigania Retreat & Conference Center on Walloon Lake in northern Michigan.

2012 Jean Monnet Graduate Fellowship


CALL FOR PROPOSALS

DEADLINE: December 1, 2011



The Center for European Studies and the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies are offering students summer grants of $5,000 to work on issues of European integration, broadly defined. Student grantees will conduct research leading to the writing of a paper on a relevant topic of their choosing.

It is expected that during the spring and/or summer of 2012 the grantees, in consultation with faculty advisor(s), will devote twelve weeks of full time work to their projects. This is not a travel grant.

Students will participate in a not-for-credit Graduate Seminar on European Studies held in Winter semester 2012 and may be invited to contribute to selected outreach activities organized by CES at local high schools, colleges, and universities. They will be invited to present the preliminary results of their research at a public event held in the fall of 2012.

Students in professional schools and graduate programs are eligible to apply. The fellowship is limited to returning students. Students in the last year of terminal degree programs are not eligible.

Applicants should submit the 2012 Jean Monnet Graduate Fellowship Application (available at www.ii.umich.edu/ces-euc), a 2-3 page proposal describing the project they intend to carry out, including its topic, aims, method, and anticipated scholarly contribution. They should also indicate the period in which they will be conducting full time work on their project. A letter of recommendation from a University of Michigan faculty member (preferably the student’s advisor), a current transcript (or permission for CES to electronically access it), and current CV should accompany the proposal.

Graduate Workshop on European Studies


The Center for European Studies announces an interdisciplinary not-for-credit workshop for advanced graduate students working on issues relevant to Europe and the European Union.


ELIGIBILITY:
This workshop is open to advanced graduate students with interests in European studies. Graduate students from across disciplines are invited to apply.

PURPOSE:
The workshop offers students the opportunity to benefit from their peers’ feedback in the development of dissertation chapters, articles for publication, and proposals for funding, in an interdisciplinary setting. An additional goal of the workshop is to provide a forum for past recipients of the Jean Monnet Fellowship for Research on European Integration to interact with students who are applying for the Fellowship or intend to do so in the future. Therefore, current Jean Monnet Fellowship applicants are particularly encouraged to apply for participation in the workshop.

ORGANIZATION:
The workshop will be aimed at providing an interdisciplinary forum for graduate students working on European topics. It will convene during the Winter 2012 semester for two-hour sessions, which will be organized around discussion of student work. Speakers from the “Conversations on Europe” lecture series may be invited to visit the workshop as well.  The workshop will be supervised by Karla Mallette, CES director and Associate Professor of Italian and Near Eastern Studies.

Intern in Aachen, Germany with UROP International


UROP International is designed for students from North American Universities who wish to gain research experience by conducting research projects at RWTH Aachen University. It takes place during the summer months each year, between May and the end of July.  
UROP International at RWTH Aachen Aachen consists of three elements:
  • the program’s core, a research internship carried out in a research facility or lab at RWTH Aachen University, supervised by excellent academic staff,
  • research-related field trips, an intensive German language course, an intercultural training
and
  • leisure time activities to introduce students to German science, history and culture and get them in contact with German and international students. 


Program dates for 2012 are May 21st through July 27th, 2012

Undergraduate Internships with the Pasteur Foundation in Paris, France


The Pasteur Foundation Summer Internship Program provides U.S. undergraduates with the rare opportunity to conduct summer research at the Institut Pasteur. The foundation’s goal is to encourage students in the pursuit of a scientific career and to expose them to an international laboratory experience.



Each year, four laboratories at the Institut Pasteur are chosen to host U.S. undergraduates. For the Summer of 2012, the host labs will be the Herbomel, Olivo-Marin, Spaeth and Trieu-Cuot labs.


Eligibility: Applicants must 1) be undergraduates with an excellent academic record and a strong interest in biosciences and biomedical research (prior lab experience is highly recommended); 2) have completed three full years (six semesters) of college course work by the time the internship commences; and 3) not have received an undergraduate degree at the time of application. Knowledge of French or desire to learn it is advisable. This program is open to U.S. citizens only.
The application deadline will be December 16, 2011. Applicants are notified in February, and awardees are asked to accept or decline their positions by early March.

These research support programs offer US scholars and professionals the opportunity to conduct policy-relevant research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Global Course Connections (GCC) & Ready Set Go…Global Information Session

What are GCC’s?

 Students participate in a field-based extension of selected U-M Courses. Participants enroll for winter term courses on campus and

then travel 10-28 days with their professor and classmates to field sites where students will put into practice what they have learned

in their course. Students receive 2 additional Winter term credits for their site work. See attached flyer for Winter 2012 GCC’s.

 Come meet with the GCC program advisor on November 11th to learn how GCC’s work and how to apply for a program.  Students will also receive information about other global opportunities available through CGIS.

The Symposium takes place on Friday 11/11/11 on the 4th floor of Rackham from 10:00am–4:00pm.  This is the largest event that the Center for Global Health hosts each year, and we hope that the audience is full old friends and new!

New this year is an oral segment entitled “Global Gab: Short talks that will blow your mind,” loosely based on the format for TED conference presentations.  All abstract submitters went through an oral audition in order to be selected for presentation.  

  • The seven selected presenters include students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members from across the University. 
  • Presentations will be diverse by topic and discipline and include (among others): The relationship of birth defects in Iraq and exposure to global war pollution; The impact of headaches among Native Indians in South America; Research, education, and service in Post Coup Honduras; and Using microbes to remove arsenic and other contaminants from drinking water. 

The afternoon poster session showcases the work of students from across campus who are engaged in global health research. 

  • More than 10 schools/college represented
  • Diverse topics covering maternal & child health, global climate and the environmental impact on health, social determinants of health, and noncommunicable diseases (cancer, iron deficiency anemia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease)
  • Undergraduates, masters, doctoral & professional students will be presenting their posters
  • Two awards will be given, one for scientific work and one by 'student vote'
